Heather fell in love with writing shortly after her parents put a pencil in her hand. After a high-school co-op program introduced her to the art of journalism, she headed to Carleton University's School of Journalism and spent four years mastering the inverted pyramid.
After graduation she accepted a position with the Toronto Star Newspaper where she learned that the best inverted pyramid in the world isn't much use if you don't have a nose for a story and a passion for getting it right. She spent years sharpening her senses on a variety of beats, covering everything from murders to summer camp and learning from some of the best in the business.
In 1996 University of Windsor Law school called and Heather answered. Three years later she left with a degree in her hand and an engagement ring from her high school sweetheart on her finger. Both milestones changed her life.
Called to the bar in 2001 she began a seven year career as a lawyer with Canada's largest national law firm. There she mastered the fine art of juggling: A marriage, the birth of her first child, a national travel column, a national real estate column, a second child, writing for legal publications and occasionally making dinner.
In 2007 she came to her senses and returned to writing full time. Today, almost 15 years after her first article appeared, you can still find her in The Toronto Star. Her travel column is in its 5th year and she also writes regularly for the New in Homes and Living sections. You'll also find her writing in the magazines you like to read (Elle Canada, Style at Home, Wondertime, among them) and on sites you trust (Chatelaine.com, Travel to Wellness.com, family.go.com)
When she's not sitting at her computer you'll find her transporting the kids to school, in the drive-thru line at Tim Hortons or waiting to board a flight in the airport lounge. No matter where she's sitting you can be sure she's already thinking about the next great story. |
